What's in a Generation's Name?
Generations are most often and aptly shaped by the events, the leaders, and even the trends of their time – but what’s in a name? According to a recent study by Harris Interactive, 4,000 Americans aged 21 to 83 were asked what they thought of different generations.
It’s kind of interesting that Gen Y (or Millennials), Gen X, and even the Silent Generation had something to say – they all are yearning for a new brand that better represents them. In fact, Baby Boomers are the only generation that overwhelmingly agree with the label they’ve been given.
- Gen Y would like to rename themselves the "Internet Generation" (32%). They really dislike being called "Generation Y" or "Millennials";
- Gen X would choose to rename themselves "Generation Tech" (25%). They dislike being called "Generation X";
- The Silent Generation would re-name themselves the "Responsible Generation" (44%). They strongly dislike being called "Silent" or "Invisible."
- Baby Boomers are the only generation which seems to really like the name given to them (27%).
But perhaps more fascinating than any of the rebranding that’s going on above, are the characteristics associated with these age cohorts. With the emphasis that my generation (the Millennials) place on finding meaningful work, leveraging technology, and making the world a better place, I was a bit surprised to see the following statements. According to this study, Boomers and Xers both pull ahead of Gen Y when it comes to being socially conscious, innovative, and having a positive effect on society.
- There is no consensus as to which generation is most socially conscious, but Baby Boomers (34%) and Generation X (26%) top the list;
- A 41 percent plurality sees Generation X as the most innovative, followed by Baby Boomers (25%) and then Generation Y (22%);
- Baby Boomers (35%) are most widely viewed as having a positive effect on society, followed by Generation X (25%).
Any surprises or reactions from our multi-generation readers?
