Who is a Social Citizen?
Do you actively seek out new and creative ways to improve your community and the lives of those around you?
Are you constantly trying out the latest tech tools and gadgets or using social media to connect with others and share your ideas for good?
Are you a young change maker who is part of the next generation of leaders and someone who is passionate about collaborating with other people, organizations, businesses, and groups to make to make the world a better place?
If you answered YES to any of these questions… or if simply visiting this site sparks a desire to learn more about this concept, then chances are you’re a Social Citizen—someone who embraces openness, transparency, and the use of cutting edge tools and innovative ideas to promote social good in his or her community and around the world.
What is Social Citizens?
An initiative of the Case Foundation, Social Citizens exists to increase the effectiveness of fearless next generation change makers, to inspire the inactive, and to influence the institutions (be it nonprofit, business or government) where Social Citizens live, work and play.
At the end of the day, by increasing their effectiveness, inspiring new action and influencing their institutions we aim to strengthen our collective potential to innovate and create change–and, we think that’s a good thing!
We see bold young leaders rising from the next generation who are adopting new technology, fostering transparency, developing new tools, new approaches, and the unique characteristics of their generation—collaboration, openness, transparency, cross-sector mindsets, and passion to do good—to create change in exciting and fresh ways.
We strive to ignite meaningful conversations, both by and for the next generation, spotlighting the successes, challenges, failures, and opportunities it faces.
We believe Social Citizens have the ability and power to quicken the pace of change, jumpstart a new wave of changemakers, and deepen their impact and effectiveness across all sectors.
Our goal for this platform is to inspire, create, and cultivate a robust conversation and spark action where Social Citizens define themselves and demonstrate how they are fearlessly shifting the dynamics of social change... for good!
How Social Citizens Began
In early 2008, inspired by evidence of a new, youth-led, technology-driven approach to change, the Case Foundation embarked on a research initiative to explore how the next generation, and Millennials in particular, were changing the nature of social change. The outcome of this project was the realization that there exists a very large and diverse group driving an even bigger trend that impacts us all.
We found that the attributes of a Social Citizen such as digital fluency, idealism, and immersion in social causes are closely linked to the identity of those in the “next generation,” and actually cut across all sectors and backgrounds–and sometimes across generations.
Seeing a need and desire to explore this area further, the Case Foundation created SocialCitizens.org, a public platform for anyone interested in learning more about how the next generation is using their unique traits, passion for engagement and inherent mastery of social technology to impact communities and causes larger than themselves.
About the Case Foundation
The Case Foundation, created by Steve and Jean Case in 1997, invests in people and ideas that can change the world, with the ultimate goal of making giving back a part of everyday life.
We create and support initiatives that that leverage new technologies and entrepreneurial approaches to drive innovation in the social sector and encourage individuals to get involved with the communities and causes they care about.
